Start with the total and the scope
Look for the price you will actually pay, including BTW, and a clear description of the work. Check whether it is a fixed quote or an estimate based on time and materials.
Then compare the boiler’s exact make and model. CW4 and CW5 describe different hot-water performance, so two quotes for a ‘new boiler’ may not be offering the same thing.

If a line is unclear, ask for it to be explained in writing before accepting. The conditions that apply to one company’s quote may be different from another’s.
Check the installation details
- Boiler: exact model, hot-water class and controls.
- Flue and air supply: what is being assessed or replaced, including the roof or wall outlet.
- Connections: gas, water, heating and condensate pipework.
- Other parts: expansion vessel, valves, filter and thermostat.
- Access: stairs, roof access or equipment needed to reach the work.
- Completion: commissioning, handover, waste removal and any making good.
For an apartment, check what depends on the VvE or a shared flue. That can affect both the scope and the booking date.
Keep options separate
A filter or upgraded thermostat may be useful, but you should be able to see the cost and decide. Ask which items are necessary for the installation and which are optional.
A cheaper total is not enough on its own to judge a quote. Once the scope is lined up, you can compare the price, advice, availability and the person doing the work.
Agree how changes will be handled
Ask what happens if something unexpected is found. On my jobs, I discuss additional work and its cost before carrying it out. Keep a written record of changes so the final invoice is easy to follow.
